News Round-up
Congratulations to Lynn Henderson who battled through wintery weather to set a storming sub-90 minute PB at Sunday's (19 February) Kinross to Lossiemouth Half Marathon. Although hampered by snow and bad roads on the way north, Lynn found Moray snow-free and made the best of the cold but near perfect conditions to run an impressive 89:45 to finish 6th female in what was a very strong field. The woman's race was won by Melissa Whyte of Inverness Harriers in a time of 76:30 while last year's Clova winnner, Nick Milovsorov headed home the men's field in 71:49.
Meanwhile, just a reminder that this month's club meeting will feature a talk on Ultra-marathon running from our very own Craig Stewart. Over the last few years Craig has proved himself a competitive and prolific racer over the gruelling ultra-marathon distances, racking up a string of impressive results, including two sub-22 hour finishes at the 95 mile West Highland Way Race, and top ten finishes at the Cateran 55 and the 41 mile River Ayr Way Challenge - come along and be inspired! Meeting starts as 7:30pm, Sunday 26 February, in the Osnaburg Bar.

Race report from Craig Stewart from The Devil's Burden Relay Race on 21 Jan.
On what looked like a great day for running the Lomonds across in Fife it was very windy at the summits of East & West Lomond and I also believe from those on the ground you got the 4 seasons.
For those new to this race Bev, Sandra, MontyFox & Stewart this was a quite an experience.
I know Bev and Sandra required oxygen and fresh legs having climbed the East Lomond Leg I think altitude sickness may also have been suffered. The pair received a baptism of fire on this leg not only a steep climb 425meters but the steep descent on the other side. It was a joy to see them and having completed a tough leg in a reasonable time of 1hr15mins and the relieve on their faces when they got to the change over.
MontyFox on leg2 ran a sole leg with a gradual climb up Bishop Hill and the joy on a very cold and wet boggy section which I know took my breathe away. The descent into Scotland well was steep and hazardous as those on the 3rd climbed back up the hill. Well done Monty your section was completed in 45minutes very respectable.
On to the 3rd Leg the experienced Veteran Ron Milne and young pretender Craig Stewart climbed back up Bishop Hill having run Leg2 already to be met by howling winds and considerable drop in temperature. This the toughest leg with 2 hill ascents and descents of Bishop Hill and West Lomond.
One lapse of concentration saw Craig stumble and headbutt the Heather and as he shook it off he sees his club mate Brain Bonnyman running for his 1st Club Westerlands hit the deck in similar fashion - it happens to the best - the joys of hill running.
The joy of Ron reaching the summit of West Lomond was clear for all at the top to see and to then see him descend with the grace and elegance of a mountain goat on the other side was a joy see. I'm sure the gent he is he also managed to assist some floundering females on the way.
The 3rd leg drew to conclusion through a muddy field and the knowledge we could now jump in the car back to the finish to see Stewart complete the race.
Stewart enjoyed his sole leg bringing the team home in 4hrs 02minutes and 102 place. The 4th leg is 8km through forest track with gradual ascents and descents. A good leg for Stewart who took his time to pick up his pace and have little individual battles with competitors in front of him. I was there at the end to see Stewart look rather tired and relieved his leg was over.
All in all a good day out in Fife for the Forfar Hill Runners.
A special thank you to Brian Bonnyman who organised the team and Liz Nicoll who was there to provide support and encouragement to the team.
May this experience encourage others to become involved in the joys of Hill Running and off road. looking forward to 2013 event already where I would hope to have 2 teams?
If you are interested let us know as other events are run throughout the year and the Pain does go away !! Honest

Race report from Glenogle 33 Ultra 5.11.11 by Craig Stewart
A new ultra for 2011 running from Strathyre to Killin Forest over the viaduct and looking out over lochearnhead. Saturday morning was frosty and foggy which soon burnt off when the sun came up for the start of the race at 8am ah prefect running conditions.
The route follows cycle path7, over a variety of different surfaces, trail, road, cinder and mud every ultra runners delight. As this was the end of season ultra there was a few familiar faces who i had either followed or been followed by the joys of running this distance is that people are more than willing to chat along the way and to encourage each other.
Time just seem to past me by as 2 1/2hrs went by and i past the 18 mile mark heading home on a downhill section. This also meant that we got to see the loch again in its full winter beauty. At mile 25 we hit the road oh no the legs begin to really hurt passing a distance relatives burial ground at Balquidder (Rob Roy) head down I plod on knowing it wasn't far to go, then a sign 1 1/2 miles to go (alas false hope) it was more like 3 and some more climbs to do. Eventually after 4hrs and 5 mins i cross the finish line having caught another couple of runners in the last stages. Hooray.
I now had to waited on Scott crossing the line but unfortunately had to leave just before he got finished in 5hrs 40 mins and having spoken to him he was happy to get finished but he had thoroughly enjoyed completing his 3rd ultra this year. Not bad for a newbie.
For anybody wanting run beyond marathon i would say this race is worth thinking about, the organisation, marshalls and support was great along with good signage and stunning scenery Go on think about it.
It was also good to see Antonia again who had been running her 4th Ultra of the year and finishing in a very respectable 4hrs 38mins.
Its now time to think about next years events and to encourage a few other participants from the club and yes i have agreed to talk at the club meeting at the end of February 2012 about my experiences running Ultras.

Race report from Templeton 10 6/11/11 by Brian Bonnyman
There was a great turnout at yesterday's Templeton 10 miler which saw no less than 14 runners in action for the club in near perfect conditions. At the front of the field the first mile, usually a mad downhill stampede, was unusually subdued, with nobody wanting to take on the lead. Eventually, Neil Young of Fife AC eased to the front, closely shadowed by Dundee Hawkhill's flying Dutchman, Rodger Van Gompel. On the first climb the pair slowly began to pull away from the rest of the pack, before Neil gradually dropped Rodger, and went on to build a substantial lead. I was sitting in third place a fair bit back from Rodger when Greg Simson of Perth RR passed me around mile eight, just as I'd started suffering from a bit of a stitch. I managed to keep Greg in sight and started to reel him back in on the final climb back up to the woods and we had a great tussle along the track, running shoulder to shoulder, until he out-sprinted me down the grassy banking to the finish. About a minute and a half later, Neil Young came sprinting in, fairly fuming at having missed the final turn into the woods - which, through some mix up, had been left un-marshalled - and ran on until he hit the Coupar Angus Road! Second home for Forfar was Craig, muttering some lame excuse about having ran a 33 mile ultra the day before, closely followed by Lynn who ran an excellent 70:23 to claim the 3rd female prize. Rory was back next, cheered in by Pauline and the kids, closely followed by Ewan in 74:11, who managed to grab some valuable championship points from his old sparring partner Ron, who was next FRR back. Mark was next back obviously enjoying his first Templeton, a few minutes ahead of Hugh, who struggled in bravely after injuring his calf muscle about halfway round. Eileen had a great run 91:16 about a minute, ahead of Bev, who racked up yet another massive PB. Next back were Sandra and Angie, suspiciously close together (I just hope there wasn't any chatting), followed by Liz and Karen. We didn't manage to retain the men's team prize, with Fife picking up both team titles, but it was nonetheless a great team effort all round - well done everyone!

Race report from Templeton 10 6/11/11 by Ewan Greenhill
What a fantastic turnout from the sky blue vests on Sunday. Excellent conditions made it a little bit more enjoyable over the demanding route. Got stuck at the back when the gun went off which gave me a little more work to do early on to get back in the race.
Congratulations to Brian Bonnyman and Lynn Henderson for terrific performances. Craig well up there despite having a 33 mile warm up the day before. Just an incredible performance Craig. Rory well done, I thought I was going past you at 8 mile but you proved not to be a sleeping policeman and far too strong for me going up the last hill and through the wood. Ron is never beaten and I knew he would not be far behind. You must have been closing on me by the finish Ron.
Good performances coming from Mark. Hugh a PB. Eileen PB, Bev PB, Sandra and Angie PB all very close together showing there is a alot more to come from the girls yet in the way lowering their times.
Liz and Karen you tackled what is a toughy. Easy to step back and not do it but you showed character and did it. Chuffed for you.
